Scale
For the Dough:
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 ¼ cups warm water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
For the Sauce:
- 1 ½ cups canned San Marzano tomatoes (crushed)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp sugar
Toppings:
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup fresh basil leaves
- Optional toppings: pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, olives
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough (Prep Time: 2 hrs)
- In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–7 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and olive oil, mixing until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1–2 hours until it doubles in size.
- Make the Sauce (Cook Time: 15 min)
- Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Sauté garlic until fragrant.
- Add crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and sugar. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Assemble the Pizza Pie (Cook Time: 10–12 min)
- Preheat your oven to 500°F (260°C) and place a pizza stone or steel in the oven.
- Roll out the dough into a 12-inch circle. Transfer it to a parchment-lined pizza peel.
- Spread the sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust. Add cheese and your desired toppings.
- Bake and Serve
- Slide the pizza onto the preheated stone or steel. Bake for 7–10 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
- Garnish with fresh basil and serve immediately.
Notes
- Let the dough rise in a warm spot for better texture.
- Adjust the amount of sugar in the sauce based on the sweetness of your tomatoes.
- For a crispier crust, brush the edges with olive oil before baking.
